A defensive battle in St. Louis ended with a point apiece as Energy FC drew with Saint Louis FC, 0-0, on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 45 minutes, with STL having the best opportunity in the 9th minute. Forward Michael Cox got in behind the defense, and as Bryan Byars came to close down the angle, Cox played the ball back to the top of the box hoping to find a late-arriving teammate. Midfielder Kadeem Dacres was there and struck his shot with power, but Byars recovered to scramble back across goal and swat the ball away in what will surely be a nominee for  USL Save of the Week.

Deshorn Brown came closest to finding the back of the net in the second half. In the 57th minute, Brown found himself near the corner flag, created a yard of space and tried a wildly ambitious, left-footed effort that beat STL goalkeeper Tomas Gomez but not the frame, as it pinged the crossbar and went out of bounds.

Needing just a point to lock up a playoff spot, Saint Louis FC played relatively conservatively in the later stages of the match, and each sides' resolute defenses made it difficult for either attack to find a way through.

There will be no postseason play this year, but Energy FC will be back in 2019 looking to build on the positive momentum that's been gained as the season progressed.
