Energy FC won their fourth straight match with an emphatic 3-0 win over Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Taft Stadium. Christian Volesky, Adam Jahn and Marco Bustos each scored while Cody Laurendi stopped four shots to earn the win.
Laurendi kept the team in the match early with two big saves early in the first half. That allowed Energy FC to take the lead on a set-piece goal in the 28th minute by Christian Volesky.
Jose Barril served the ball into the box from the right-wing corner. Volesky elevated above the Sounders defense to head the ball past Seattle keeper Calle Brown. The goal is Volesky’s team-leading 10th of the season and the fourth straight match in which he has scored. That ties the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal.
The second half was controlled largely by Energy FC as they outshot Seattle 10-1 and outscored them 2-0 on the scoreboard.
Adam Jahn scored his third as a member of Energy FC in the 56th minute. Jose Barril sent the ball goalward where it bounded around and was held in play Richard Dixon. The ball made its way to Jahn who was standing at the top of the six where he sent the shot home.
Energy FC continued to threaten and newcomer Marco Bustos was rewarded in the 78th minute. Just one minute after coming on as a sub for Volesky, Jose Barril found Bustos in the box near the top of the six where he deposited a left-footed shot to the back of the net. The goal was the first as a member of Energy FC.
Energy FC midfielder Jose Barril continued his solid play by picking up two assists on the night. He now has nine assists on the season, breaking the Energy FC single-season record for assists and the career franchise record for assists with 12.
The win for Energy FC is the team’s fourth straight and puts them to within two points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. This marks the second time this season that Energy FC has had a winning streak of three-or-more games.
Energy FC returns to action next Sunday on the road against Swope Park Rangers. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
