Energy FC signed midfielder Marco Bustos to a contract, Head Coach Steve Cooke announced today. The transaction is pending approval from U.S. Soccer Federation and the league.
He’s played the majority of his professional career with the Whitecaps organization and scored 22 goals in 57 matches. He was loaned to CA Zacatepec of Ascenso MX league where he’s played in five matches.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Bustos joined the Whitecaps academy in 2011. As a homegrown player, he played with the Whitecaps at the U16, U18, U20 and U23 levels before making his MLS debut against FC Dallas during the 2015 season.
He has represented his country as a member of Canada’s U17, U20 and full national team. He made his men’s national team debut in a friendly against Ghana during the 2015 season.
“We are excited to add another player with the attacking quality and work ethic that Marco plays with,” said Cooke. “He’s a player that has significant experience, has been highly successful in our league as well as on an international scale. I think he can make an immediate impact with our club as we press forward in the last quarter of our season.”
Bustos could be on the 18-man roster as early as Energy FC’s next match this Saturday on the road against Rio Grande Valley FC. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. from H-E-B Stadium in Hidalgo, Texas.
