OKLAHOMA CITY – OKC Energy FC announced on Wednesday that goalkeeper Matt VanOekel had been ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 USL season after undergoing a successful surgery to repair an injury to the upper region of his right leg sustained earlier this month.

VanOekel suffered the injury early in the second half of Energy FC’s 1-1 draw against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on July 7 at Taft Stadium. The veteran shot-stopper is expected to be sidelined for the next four months.

“First and foremost, we feel for Matt as he begins the challenge of recovery and rehabilitation.  Losing Matt is a blow for our club, but given his dedication and hard work, we know he will return to the team stronger, fitter and better than ever,” said Energy FC Head Coach Steve Cooke. “Matt is a proven to be a leader and although he won’t be on the field during our upcoming games, we know he will give a great deal to the team during training sessions and be a presence in the community as he fully recovers.”

Energy FC will be in action this Saturday as the visit Sacramento Republic FC at Papa Murphy’s Park with kickoff scheduled for 11 p.m. ET.
