Brazos Valley Cavalry FC defeated OKC Energy FC U23 1-3 on Friday afternoon at Oklahoma City University.

BVFC jumped ahead in the 10th minute, after Angel Paita’s shot was saved by Nicholas Mertzokat but parried directly to Darrell Johnson at the top of the box. Johnson took his shot first time, caught it clean and it ended up in the back of the net.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Mason Schuster got on the end of a through ball from Johnson and was able to slide his shot past the onrushing Mertzokat.

The Greens didn’t produce much on the attacking end in the first half until Garrett McLaughlin was fouled on the edge of the box in stoppage time. Up stepped Louis Bennett, who bent a low shot around the outside of the wall and past a diving Pedro Medrano.

Both sides created plenty of chances in the second half, but the final goal of the afternoon came in the 59th minute, when Marcelo Palomino struck a free kick from 30 yards that swerved past Merzokat to extend the Cavalry’s lead back to two.

The next match for the U23s is July 8 at AirHogs Stadium against Texas United.
