OKC Energy FC earned a point away from home in the second Black Gold Derby of 2018. Goals from Christian Volesky and Joaquin Rivas resulted in a draw with Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Saturday night at ONEOK Field.

The Greens got off to a flying start when Alex Dixon played a perfectly weighted through ball to Volesky. The striker took one touch in stride and shot back across his body. The ball ended up in the back of the net and left Fabian Cerda rooted to the ground.

Tulsa didn’t waste much time getting back in to the match. Just 15 minutes later, a long ball over the top found Jhon Pirez in space behind the defense. Pirez backheeled a pass to a wide open Rivas, who calmly slotted the ball in to the back of the net from the top of the box.

The remainder of the half was back and forth and fairly chippy, with the teams combining for 12 fouls and Tulsa picking up 2 yellow cards.

The closest either side came to scoring again in the opening 45 was on an Energy FC corner kick in the 34th minute. Jon Brown’s outswinger found Callum Ross near the six yard box, but his header was just off target.

Neither side could find a winner in the second half, but OKC came the closest. Brown served up a perfect corner kick in the 55th minute that found Christian Ibeagha all alone near the penalty spot. The center back rose to head the ball but didn’t quite get the timing right and it missed the target.

Energy FC nearly went ahead again the 75th minute when Volesky got on the end of another excellent through ball, this time from Ema Twumasi. Volesky’s shot beat Cerda but Tulsa defender Wyatt Omsberg was able to clear it off the goal line before it went in.

All in all, a point away from home in a derby match isn’t a bad result by any means. The Greens will need at least a point in the next meeting between the teams on August 8 at ONEOK Field to bring the wrench back home to Oklahoma City.

Next up for OKC is a visit from Reno 1868 FC at Taft Stadium on June 2. That one is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m., and you can find tickets at energyfc.com/june2 or by calling (405)235-5425.
