Energy FC U23s picked up their first three points of the 2018 campaign with a 2-0 victory over AHFC Royals on Thursday evening at Oklahoma City University. Goals from Matt Puig and Tyler LaCourse proved to be the difference in a good display for the home side.

Matt Puig opened the scoring in the first half after he was able to bring down a free kick from Josh Garcia, collect and shoot for the far post. AHFC defender Connaugh Wilks’s attempted block deflected past goalkeeper Frederick Lorenezen and into the back of the net.

Nicholaz Merzokat, in his first start for the U23s, was called upon on a couple of occasions in the opening 45 minutes. AHFC looked to level the score shortly after going behind as Killian Colombie was in alone on goal. Merzokat did well to get off his line and deny the forward on the breakaway.

AHFC created several decent chances in the second half – none better than Thomas Haney’s back-to-back attempts. The defender did well to control a bouncing ball in the box and get off a shot that sailed just over the bar in the 66th minute. Just two minutes later, Haney found himself wide open on the end of a cross, but his header went well wide of the goal.

Energy FC U23 doubled their lead in the 79th minute after a well worked passing sequence found its way to Louis Bennett down the left near the end line. Bennett whipped in an inch-perfect cross to the back post that found Tyler LaCourse all alone, and the center back calmly nodded it home.

AHFC hardly threatened throughout the remainder of the match, and the Greens cruised to their first victory of the young season.

The next match for the U23s is June 2 at Taft Stadium against FC Cleburne. Fans with a ticket to the Energy FC first team match that evening will be able to attend the U23 match for free.
