Justin Chavez returns to play for hometown club

Energy FC signed midfielder Justin Chavez to a contract for the 2018 season, Head Coach Steve Cooke announced today.  The transaction is pending U.S. Soccer Federation and USL approval.

Chavez hails from Oklahoma City and is returning to play for his hometown team.  He played the last three seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies.  He appeared in 54 matches with the Rowdies, played 3,250 minutes, added one goal and four assists.  Prior to his stint with Tampa Bay, he played two seasons with the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, appeared in 27 matches and played 1,477 minutes.  In all, he’s played 81 matches as a pro, logged 4,727 minutes, added one goal and four assists.    

“We are delighted and excited to be able to bring a player of Justin’s experience and quality to Energy FC,” said Cooke.  “Over several years as a professional, Justin has shown both the talent and personal character traits that will make him an important addition to our roster and locker room for the 2018 season.”

Cooke continued, “Alongside his on-field performances, to be able to bring Justin “home” to OKC is a huge boost in the community.  As we develop our integrated player pathway, Justin is a shining example of young players in Oklahoma to see how one of their own has been able to enjoy a successful career.”

Following a distinguished high school career at Edmond Memorial High School, Chavez went on to play four seasons with the University of Tulsa.  A four-year letterwinner, he started 75 of the 77 matches he played, scored five goals and added four assists.  After his collegiate career, he was selected by the Chicago Fire of MLS in the 2012 Supplemental Draft.

The addition of Chavez brings the number players that have returned to Oklahoma City to play for Energy FC to four.  He joins goalkeeper Bryan Byars, defenders Christian Ibeagha and Shawn McLaws.

Chavez brings the number of players signed for the 2018 season to 18.  He joins goalkeepers Matt Van Oekel and Bryan Byars; defenders Kyle Hyland, Richard Dixon, Shawn McLaws, Coady Andrews and Christian Ibeagha; midfielders Juan Pablo Guzman, Jose Barril, Philip Rasmussen, Callum Ross, Joseph Adjei and Alex Dixon; forwards Miguel Gonzalez, Jose Angulo, Jaime Siaj and Jonathan Brown.
