Coaching staff selects four standouts to continue training with Energy FC

Four trialists competing in the 2018 Energy FC Open Combine were selected Sunday by the OKC Energy FC coaching staff to begin the club’s upcoming preseason training period as trialists. More than 80 prospects from around the world competed in the three-day combine.

At the conclusion of the event that began at the Edmond Soccer Club and ended at Taft Stadium, Energy FC head coach Steve Cooke announced that Kyle McLagan, Joshua Garcia, Nicholas Downs and Vladimir Kalajdzic would each be invited to begin preseason training with Energy FC.

“These four, they’ve really knuckled down and done a good job over these last three days,” Cooke said. “Hopefully, they can continue that in preseason.”

Kalajdzic, a native of Novi Sad, Serbia, most recently played at Oklahoma City University, where he was selected for the All-Sooner Athletic Conference First Team in each of his three seasons.

Downs, a native of Lawton most recently played at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where the defender earned All-Southern Conference Second Team honors as a junior in 2015.

An Oklahoma City native, Garcia was named to The Oklahoman All-City soccer team in 2011 as a senior at U.S. Grant High School. The midfielder has most recently been a local standout in the Latin and American Soccer League of Oklahoma Inc. (LASLOI).

McLagan, a Kansas City native, played for Nashville SC U23 of the PDL last year and was a defender at Furman University.

Energy FC’s preseason training begins on Feb. 1. The club’s 2018 USL regular season starts March 17, with OKC taking on in-state rival Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Taft Stadium
