Lindo Mfeka’s hat trick leads Reno 1868 FC to win

Lindo Mfeka scored all three goals as Reno 1868 FC clinched a playoff spot with a 3-0 win over Energy FC.

Mfeka opened the scoring in the 19th minute after picking up a loose pass from Juan Pablo Guzman, dribbling into the box, and driving one off Cody Laurendi’s fingertips.

In the 35th minute, Cody Laurendi and Coady Andrews collided in the box, resulting in substitutions for both players. Both were helped off of the field with lower leg injuries.

Mfeka doubled the lead with a left footed shot from distance in the 40th minute. The midfielder found some space down the middle of the field and unleashed a drive into the bottom corner that was just out of reach for substitute goalkeeper CJ Cochran.

Energy FC responded immediately and nearly got back into the game, but Jonathan Brown was denied by the post and Jose Angulo’s follow up was hit right into Brown to keep the deficit at two.

Reno added to their lead in the 62nd minute after Mfeka and Chris Wehan linked up in the Energy box to give the midfielder his third goal of the night.

With the loss, Energy FC fall to 10-11-7 but remain in 8th place in the USL Western Conference. Reno improved to 15-6-7, 2nd in the table and clinched a spot in the playoffs.

OKC’s next match is a 9:30 p.m. CDT start on Saturday, September 23, when the team travels to Sacramento, CA for a meeting with Sacramento Republic FC.

The next home match for Energy FC is a 5 p.m. CDT start on Sunday, October 1, when OKC welcomes LA Galaxy II to Taft Stadium.
