Energy FC fell behind early and lost to the Swope Park Rangers 2-0 on the road in Kansas City. Lebo Moloto scored both goals for Swope Park.
The Greens fell behind in the first half after the referee determined that Cody Laurendi brought down Swope Park Rangers’ Tyler Pansher in the box in the 18th minute. The contact looked minimal, but Lebo Moloto stepped up and dispatched the penalty down the middle as Laurendi dove to his right.
The Greens looked likely to level the score with Miguel Gonzalez coming close in the 41st minute. Jose Angulo played a through ball in behind the Swope Park defense into the path of Gonzalez, but his chipped effort drifted just past the far post.
Jose Angulo created several chances of his own from outside the box in the opening 45 minutes, but he was unable to really test Swope Park goalkeeper Adrian Zendejes from distance.
Swope Park doubled their lead early in the second half when Felipe Hernandez dribbled into the box to the end line and cut one back for a waiting Moloto. The striker was able to finish from six yards out and double his tally on the night.
Energy FC had few chances to get back into the game and never really came close to testing Adrian Zendejas in the latter stages of the match.
With the loss, OKC move to 9-10-6 on the season, while Swope Park now sit at 13-6-6. The loss, combined with a win by Phoenix Rising FC means Energy FC now sits in the #9 position in the Western Conference. The top eight teams make the postseason.
The next match for Energy FC is a 5 p.m. CDT kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 10, when OKC takes on Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Taft Stadium.
