Alex Dixon scored two goals to lead OKC Energy FC to a 2-0 win over the USL Western Conference-leading Real Monarchs SLC Saturday night at Taft Stadium. The win extended Energy FC’s unbeaten streak to a season-high five games.
With the match scoreless in the 26th minute of play, Dixon won a loose ball near the upper-left corner of the Monarchs box and maneuvered around a trio of defenders before blasting a right-footed shot past SLC keeper Connor Sparrow. Dixon’s fifth goal of the season gave OKC a 1-0 lead.
In the 56th minute, OKC’s Andy Craven sent a midfield pass to Anthony Wallace in the OKC defensive half and sprinted up field, where Wallace quickly sent a return pass to the wide-open Craven. Craven carried the ball into the Monarchs box and made a last-second dish to Dixon, who chipped a shot into the vacant side of the net.
The two-goal match gave Dixon the team lead in goals with six. Craven currently ranks second with five. Three of Dixon’s goals this season have come against the Monarchs.
The multi-goal win was Energy FC’s first at home since a 3-0 win over Tulsa Roughnecks FC on July 23, 2016.
With the win, Energy FC’s record eclipsed the .500 mark for the first time in 2017, improving to 8-8-5, good for seventh place in the USL Western Conference. The conference-leading Monarchs suffered just their third loss of the season, dropping to 15-3-3.
Energy FC next travels to Tulsa, for a 7:30 p.m. CDT start on Saturday, August 12, against the in-state rival Roughnecks FC.
OKC returns home to face second-place San Antonio FC on Saturday, August 19.
