Andy Craven netted a team-high fifth goal of the season as Los Angeles Galaxy II and OKC Energy FC battled to a 1-1 draw at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Los Dos led at the break thanks to a goal in the 41st minute by Ariel Lassiter. Just moments before, OKC had a corner kick cleared away, and the resulting counter attack led to the game’s opening goal as Lassiter was able to drive a shot off the post and in.
While LA enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening 45, Energy FC had several chances to take the lead with Alex Dixon and Miguel Gonzalez both having close shots blocked at the last second.
OKC increased the pressure in the second half and were unlucky not to level the score shortly after the restart. Jose Barril curled a shot from the top of the box with the inside of his right foot and beat Kempin but not the post. The ball struck the inside of the woodwork and rolled across the goal line before going out for a goal kick.
The first 30 minutes of the second half resulted in several more close chances for Energy FC to draw level, but some last ditch defending by LA’s backline preserved their lead.
Super sub Andy Craven made an immediate impact shortly after coming on in the 74th minute. Jose Barril floated a ball into the box, and as Craven brought it down and made a move to get past two defenders, he was tripped up. The referee quickly pointed to the spot, wasting no time in awarding a penalty to OKC. There was no surprise as Craven stepped up and notched his fifth goal of the season (all on penalty kicks) by smashing the ball high to former Energy goalkeeper Jon Kempin’s right side.
OKC kept pressing for a late winner but were unable to find the back of the net again as both teams walked away with a point.
With the draw, OKC move to 6-8-5 on the season while LA sit at 4-11-4.
Energy FC’s next match is at home at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2, when the club welcomes Reno 1868 FC to Taft Stadium.
