Hyland quiet contributor to success against Colorado Springs

Energy FC won an exciting match over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC last Saturday by the score of 4-3.  The result of Miguel Gonzalez and Jose Angulo each scoring two goals and adding an assist was Player of the Week honors for Gonzalez and a spot on the Team of the Week for Angulo.  In addition to the accolades, several season highs and franchise records were set or tied during the match (more on that in a moment)

One element that has been overlooked in the frenzy surrounding two players with two goals and an assist in the same match was the play of Kyle Hyland.  It was the aerial service of Hyland that set up Gonzalez in the first half and the on-the-ground service that set up Angulo in the second half.

Hyland is just the second player in franchise history to record multiple assists in multiple games.  The only other player to accomplish that was Adda Djeziri who played with The Greens in 2014.

When asked what the magic is, Hyland was simplistic in his response.

“With the formation we’re playing, I can be pretty aggressive going forward,” said Hyland.

“Also, committing numbers forward.  Whenever we got the ball, no matter what, everyone started flying forward.  When you have that many people going forward and we’re all clicking at the same time, it’s difficult for teams to handle that.”

Sometimes though, executing in the game is different than executing in practice.  Head Coach Jimmy Nielsen has stressed the importance of a rhythm of practices and games as a key to the team’s success.

Hyland agrees.

“It’s nice being in a routine…being able to get certain practices and certain rest.  Being in a routine can create more of a success rate for teams.  When you’re in a routine, it’s easier to be ready for games.”

Often once something clicks in practice or a match, the team can replicate the success.

Hyland feels that is what the team was able to do in the match against Colorado Springs.

“It’s hard to do those types of things when you’re in a little bit of a rut like we were.  It just takes that one game to figure it out and then things can break through pretty quickly.  I felt that’s kinda what happened in that game.  Things started falling in to place and we just kept going with it.”

Sometimes it’s the little things that can add up to a big thing.  The work put in during practice and the hard work during the matches can lead to more consistent play and more opportunity for Energy FC as they chase playoff positioning during the back half of the 2017 regular season.

Closer look at season/franchise highs set in 4-3 win over Colorado Springs on July 22:

*  Most goals scored in a home game
*  Tied for most goals scored in franchise history
*  Highest scoring home game in franchise history (combined
    goals for both teams)
*  First time with two players each having two goals in
    same match
*   Hyland is the second player in franchise history to have
    multiple games with multiple assists
