Jose Angulo and Miguel Gonzalez net two goals apiece in 4-3 Energy win

Jose Angulo and Miguel Gonzalez each scored two goals as OKC Energy FC outlasted Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 4-3 Saturday night at Taft Stadium. OKC’s four goals were the most scored at home in club history.

Gonzalez started the scoring for OKC late in the first half. With Colorado Springs holding a 1-0 advantage on a Jordan Burt goal in the 25th minute, Energy FC’s Kyle Hyland sent a cross from the left side into the box that Gonzalez headed past Switchbacks FC keeper Moise Pouaty for the equalizer.

A little more than seven minutes later, in first-half stoppage time, Angulo gave OKC a 2-1 lead, taking a feed from Gonzalez near the upper-left corner of the Colorado Springs box and blasting a shot into the upper-left corner of the Switchbacks net. The goal was Angulo’s first since joining Energy FC on July 11.

In the 51st minute, Angulo returned Gonzalez’s assist with an assist of his own, sending a pass from the upper-right to the upper-left corner of the Switchbacks box, where Gonzalez booted a left-footed strike past Pouaty for a 3-1 OKC lead.

Just more than 8 minutes later, Hyland notched his second assist of the game when he set up Angulo’s second goal of the game. After grabbing a loose ball in the lower-left corner, Hyland sent a cross into the Colorado Springs box, where Angulo chipped a shot by Pouaty for what would be OKC’s game-winner.

The pair of goals scored by Gonzalez and Angulo marked the first time in franchise history two players scored multiple goals. The seven combined goals tied an OKC record for combined goals scored in a game, dating back to Energy FC’s 4-3 win in Portland on Aug. 8, 2015.

Hyland’s two assists marked the second time in his Energy FC career he’s tallied multiple assists in a game, with the other being a two-assist performance against Tulsa on June 4, 2016. Hyland joins 2014 midfielder Adda Djeziri as the only OKC players to have multiple games with multiple assists.

Colorado Springs cut OKC’s lead to 4-2 in the 64th minute, when Burt netted his second goal of the game, converting a penalty kick that stemmed from an OKC foul in the box.

The Switchbacks cut their deficit further in the 72nd minute, once again following an OKC foul in the box. Energy FC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi made an initial save on a penalty kick by Colorado Springs’ Kevaughn Frater, but Frater corralled the deflected shot and scored off the rebound to close the gap to 4-3.

With the win, Energy FC snapped a five-game winless skid and improved to 6-8-4 on the season. Colorado Springs dropped to 6-8-6 with its third loss in its last four games.

Energy FC next travels to Carson, Calif. where the club will take on LA Galaxy II in an 8:30 p.m. CDT start on Sunday, July 30.

OKC’s next home match is a 7:30 p.m. CDT start on Wednesday, Aug. 2, when the club welcomes 2017 USL expansion side Reno 1868 FC to Taft Stadium.
