SANDY, Utah — Chandler Hoffman scored a pair of second half goals to lead Real Monarchs SLC to a 3-1 win over OKC Energy FC Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Hoffman, who was brought on as a halftime substitution, tallied goals in the 70th and 76th minute to secure the Monarchs’ league-best 13th win of the season. In the 70th minute, Hoffman broke a 1-1 tie when a Kyle Curinga cross found Hoffman unmarked in the middle of the box, where Hoffman finished with a single touch. Moments earlier, OKC’s Anthony Wallace nearly put Energy FC ahead with a low, driven shot that Monarchs keeper Connor Sparrow was able to steer wide of the post.
Shortly after the Monarchs took the lead, OKC’s Coady Andrews was sent off for pulling down Hoffman on the edge of the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Monarchs, which Hoffman later converted.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead eight minutes in when Karsten Hanlin slotted a shot past OKC keeper Cody Laurendi off a ball that was laid back to the top of the box by the Monarchs’ Chase Minter.
In the 26th minute, OKC tied the match when a cross by Andy Craven found Dixon in the box. The resulting shot was tipped onto the crossbar by Sparrow, but Dixon got the rebound and kicked it home for his team-high-tying fourth goal of the season.
With the loss, Energy FC fell to 5-7-3 on the season, while the Monarchs improved to a USL-best 13-2-1.
Energy FC next returns home where it will face rival Tulsa Roughnecks FC in a 7:30 p.m. start on Saturday, July 8, at Taft Stadium.
The following Tuesday, Energy FC faces 2017 CONCACAF Champions League winners Pachuca in an international friendly at Taft Stadium.
