Alex Dixon scored his team-leading second goal of the season for OKC Energy FC, as the club bested Orange County SC, 1-0, Saturday night at Taft Stadium. OKC held a man advantage from the 27th minute, due to a red card issued to Orange County’s Oscar Sorto.
In the 35th minute, Energy FC’s Miguel Gonzalez carried the ball into the Orange County box and touched a short pass to Dixon streaking ahead. Dixon received the pass and booted a rolling shot into the lower-left corner, past diving OC keeper Charlie Lyon for the game’s only score. Earlier in the match, Dixon and Gonzalez combined for a nearly identical chance, with Dixon’s shot trickling just wide of the net.
Energy FC held a man advantage for more than 65 minutes of play following Sorto’s red card infraction. Prior to being sent off, Sorto hauled down OKC’s Gonzalez from behind in the Orange County box, which led to a penalty kick for Energy FC. Kyle Hyland’s ensuing kick was knocked away by Lyon for one of the keeper’s game-high eight saves.
Despite tallying just a single goal, Energy FC held a significant offensive advantage in the match, registering nine shots on goal to Orange County’s two.
The win gave Energy FC consecutive home wins for the first time in 2017 and improved the club’s record to 2-4-1. Orange County fell to 3-3-1.
Up next for OKC is a 7 p.m. CDT start on Wednesday, May 24, when the club welcomes Portland Timbers 2 to Taft Stadium. The T2 roster features Heritage Hall alumni Lamar Batista on the roster. Following a successful career at Heritage Hall and a year at UC Santa Barbara, he signed with T2.
