VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Marco Bustos scored a pair of goals to lead Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 to a 2-1 win over OKC Energy FC Wednesday night at McLeod Athletic Park. The loss was OKC's third in four games, eliminating the possibility of Energy FC hosting a playoff game in the first round of the upcoming USL Playoffs.
After Vancouver was awarded a penalty kick on a handball call in the OKC box, Bustos gave Whitecaps FC 2 a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, lining the penalty just out of the reach of diving OKC keeper Cody Laurendi.
In the 75th minute, Bustos extended Vancouver's lead to 2-0, taking a pass from Thomas Gardner inside the OKC box and rolling a soft shot to the opposite corner of the Energy FC net.
Despite a lackluster first half, Energy FC controlled most of the second, and cut Vancouver's lead in half when Michael Thomas headed a well-placed shot on goal from nearly 10 yards that sailed past diving Whitecaps keeper Spencer Richey in the 82nd minute. The goal was Thomas's fourth of the season and moved him into the team lead in points this season with 11.
Though OKC had a number of chances in the second half, they were unable to equalize, extending the club's current winless streak to five games.
Energy FC next returns home for the final match of the 2016 regular season. OKC will face Saint Louis FC in a 6 p.m. CDT start Saturday, Sept. 24, at Taft Stadium.
