EDINBURG, Texas — Goal keeper Cody Laurendi and the OKC defense led Energy FC to a scoreless draw with Rio Grande Valley FC Toros Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
Rio Grande Valley outshot Energy FC 16-3 for the match, including 10-1 in the second half, but could not muster a single goal, thanks to the play of Laurendi and the OKC defensive front consisting of Michael Harris, Cyprian Hedrick, Jacob VanCompernolle and Kalen Ryden.
The scoreless draw was the fourth in the last five games for Rio Grande Valley and the club's fifth consecutive shutout. The Toros have not surrendered a goal since June 26, but have also scored in only one of the five games since that date.
Laurendi made five saves in the game, four of which came in the latter half, including a game-saving stop on the Toros' Dzenan Catic in a one-on-one situation. The clean sheet was Laurendi's sixth in the last eight games and ninth of the season, one shy of the club's record of 10 set by Evan Newton in 2015.
The scoreless draw marked the second consecutive between the two clubs, which played to the same result in Oklahoma City on July 2. OKC finishes the season series against Rio Grande Valley winless in three games, with a 3-0 loss back on June 11 in south Texas that ended an OKC unbeaten streak of eight games.
Energy FC next returns home for a rematch of last year's USL Western Conference Final, as the club faces the defending Western Conference Champions, LA Galaxy II, in a 7:30 p.m. CST start Saturday, August 13, at Taft Stadium.
