Russ Klabough stopped four shots in penalty kicks to send Midland/Odessa Sockers FC past Energy U23 FC in the Southern Conference Championship final game Saturday afternoon at Taft Stadium.
During the first half, both teams were even possessing the ball. The first scoring opportunity came for Energy FC U23 after 20 minutes in. Noah Keats received the ball from Raul Beneit at the top of the box but his shot was off target.
Keats again had another opportunity in the 32nd minute, but Midland defender Fernando Machado deflected the captain’s shot. At halftime the score remained knotted 0-0 between the Mid South Division Champion and its runner-up.
The second half followed the rhythm of the first 45 minutes of the match. Sockers forward Bruno Henrique had a ‘one v one’ against OKC keeper Kyle Morton but his shot sailed wide.
Later in the game, prospect Devante Dubose became involved on the right side and sent a cross for Paul Wyatt, but again, the opportunity was denied by the Sockers FC defenders. After 90 minutes, it was still a scoreless draw between OKC and Odessa.
During overtime, scoreboard stayed blank. Garrett McLaughlin scored what looked like the go-ahead goal about seven minutes in to the first OT, but the play was ruled offside.
After 120 minutes of play in the scorching heat, Midland-Odessa goalkeeper Russ Klabough ended Energy U23 season saving four Penalty kicks while Energy U23 goalie Kyle Morton saved one. Midland/Odessa advances to the next round of the PDL Playoffs and will face the Central Conference Champion.
Energy FC U23 finishes their first season of play with a 10-3-1 mark, the MidSouth regular season title and an appearance in the Southern Conference Championship match.
