NORMAN, Okla. — Casey Townsend scored his second goal of the preseason as OKC Energy FC earned a 1-1 draw with the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in OKC’s final preseason friendly of 2016 Saturday at Norman North High School.
In the 21st minute of play, Norman North alum Kalen Ryden sent a cross into the UNO box from the left wing that Townsend corralled deep in the right side of the Omaha six and fired a turnaround shot past UNO keeper Joseph Ghitis for a 1-0 Energy FC lead.
OKC had several chances to extend its lead throughout the match, but Ghitis turned away a number of shots, including consecutive shots by Ryden deep in the UNO box in the 53rd minute. The Omaha keeper finished the game with seven eight saves.
UNO knotted the score at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Elvir Ibisevic found Noor Hamadi in the low-left corner of the OKC six, and Hamadi slid a shot past sprawling OKC keeper Cody Laurendi.
With the draw, OKC finished the preseason with a 2-3-2 record, with wins over the USL’s Orlando City B and Danish side HB Køge, losses to MLS clubs FC Dallas and NYCFC, and draws against conference rival Saint Louis FC and UNO.
Energy FC’s next match is the 2016 USL season opener against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Taft Stadium.
