Cochran’s penalty kick save proves key as hosts take 1-1 draw against postseason rival

OKLAHOMA CITY – A late equalizer by Seyi Adekoya earned OKC Energy FC a 1-1 draw against Indy Eleven on Wednesday night at Taft Stadium as Energy FC goalkeeper CJ Cochran made a penalty kick save in the final 10 minutes to keep the hosts in with a chance of grabbling a late point in their bid to reach the USL Championship Playoffs.

Looking to build on their victory on Sunday, Energy FC hit the woodwork inside the opening five minutes as Aidan Daniels wove in from the left and fired a shot from 25 yards that hit the near post and caromed away to safety. The visitors took the lead in the 12th minute off their first real opportunity of the game, however, as Ayoze delivered a beautiful cross from the left that was headed into the right corner of the net by Manuel Arteaga from eight yards out.

The hosts went close to responding just past the half-hour mark as Villyan Bijev picked up possession 25 yards from goal in the right channel and fired a shot just over the top-left corner of the net, and in the final minute of the half a looping from the right came to Jaime Chavez at the back post but the veteran forward was unable to steer his header on target, sending it wide of the left upright.

Chavez had another chance six minutes into the second half as OKC turned over possession in Indy’s end and quickly found the forward for a snap shot from 16 yards that went just over the crossbar. The visitors then went close to doubling their lead, though, as Arteaga swung a pass to the left for Ayoze, who cut past a defender inside the penalty area but was denied from close range by Cochran with an excellent save.

Indy again carved out a big chance to add to its lead inside the final 10 minutes as Arteaga was brought down in the left side of the penalty area, giving the visitors a chance from the penalty spot. The Argentine stepped up but his shot to the right corner was parried away by Cochran for his second big save of the half. That proved crucial with three minutes to go as Adekoya got onto the end of a cross by Arun Basuljevic from the right at the top of the six-yard area and headed home to level for the hosts.

The visitors had a chance in stoppage time to pull out a victory, only for Cochran to deny a header by Liam Doyle from just outside the six-yard area, but honors ended even leaving OKC’s playoff hopes alive as Indy’s took another serious hit.
