Villyan Bijev’s fifth goal of the season gave the Greens life in the second half, but the damage was already done as Louisville City opened up a three-goal lead and OKC lost Rob Coronado and Zach Ellis-Hayden to injury Wednesday night in Louisville.

The Greens suffered a massive blow just as the game was getting underway, as Rob Coronado, one of the season’s standout performers so far, went down in the 8th minute and had to be replaced by Sam Rogers.

Louisville City scored their first of the night just six minutes later when Wesley Charpie got on the end of Jonathan Gomez’s corner kick and nodded home from close range.

Louisville doubled its lead in the 41st minute when Tyler Gibson’s effort was saved by Kyle Ihn, but the subsequent rebound fell directly into the path of Cameron Lancaster for the tap-in.

The Greens were forced to make another substitution due to injury in the 53rd minute. This time, Zach Ellis-Hayden pulled up with a muscle injury and was replaced by Jon Brown.

Once again, Louisville scored quickly after the injury. Gomez’s ball across the top of the penalty area from the left wing found Corben Bone at the top of the box, and Bone created space to fire past Ihn.

Energy FC stepped up the pressure for the remainder of the game, creating several chances. Unfortunately, only one found the back of the net. Jaime Chavez laid the ball off for Bijev who took a couple of touches before smashing a low shot from 25 yards that skipped past Louisville goalkeeper Chris Hubbard at his near post in the 61st minute.

The loss leaves Energy FC at 14 points, remaining in 6th place in the Central Division.

Up next is the third Black Gold Derby of the season and first at ONEOK Field this Saturday in Tulsa. The Greens return home Saturday, July 24 against Sporting KC II. Tickets are still available at energyfc.com/july24.
