Defender Robert Coronado makes switch from regional rivals Rio Grande Valley FC.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Energy FC has acquired defender Robert Coronado, pending league and federation approval, Head Coach John Pascarella announced today. Coronado spent the past two seasons with Rio Grande Valley FC of the USL Championship, scoring one goal and recording five assists in 33 appearances. During the 2020 season, Coronado won 100% of his tackles, completed 79.9% of his passes and led RGV with 556 passes as a left back.

“Robert has an interesting mix of qualities that I like which come from his background in the game,” said Pascarella. “He started as a central midfielder and is a connector type of player with a good range of pass, but now he’s adapted as a pro to play left back. Those defensive qualities, as well as being able to join the attack, will be big for us.

“Robert also gives us more balance. Him being naturally left footed gives us the opportunity to attack from both sides with both fullbacks, so we can do interesting things with our interior attackers.”

Coronado, a 5’10”, 24-year-old native of La Habra, Calif., graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 2018 after a successful four-year playing career. While in college, Coronado appeared for USL League Two clubs FC Golden State Force and Orange County SC U-23.

Coronado joins goalkeepers CJ Cochran and Kyle Ihn, defenders Conor Donovan, Zach Ellis-Hayden, Atiba Harris and Mitch Osmond, midfielders Arun Basuljevic, Brad Dunwell, Kodai Iida, Seth Moses and Charlie Ward, and forwards Jaime Chavez, Frank Lopez, Groutchov Pierre and Tucker Stephenson as the players currently under contract for OKC in 2021.

Energy FC begins its eighth season in 2021 with a schedule announcement forthcoming. More information regarding Season Seat Memberships and Group Experiences can be found at energyfc.com/tickets.
