OKC and Tulsa Split the Points in Black Gold Derby

By Tyler Vaughn, 07/13/20, 9:30PM CDT

Jaime Chavez opened his Energy FC goalscoring account before FC Tulsa’s Rodrigo da Costa equalized to give each side a point at Taft Stadium in the first nationally televised Black Gold Derby.

As one might expect after a four-month break, Monday’s derby at Taft Stadium was a cagey affair throughout the 90 minutes. Both sides opened the match cautiously, and neither was able to register a shot on goal until the 39th minute.

Zach Ellis-Hayden was the first to test either keeper, but his left-footed effort was right at Tulsa’s Sean Lewis.

FC Tulsa immediately went the other way and it looked like Dario Suarez would put the visitors ahead on the breakaway, but Christian Ibeagha recovered spectacularly to make the block.

The Greens then quickly countered and Omar Gordon surged through the midfield. The Jamaican found Ellis-Hayden open on the right wing, and the right back delivered a perfect ball across the six-yard box, which Chavez met with a sliding finish.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Tulsa equalized with the last effort of the half. Lebo Moloto floated a ball across the penalty area from the left wing, Marlon Santos headed it down, and Da Costa was able to reach the ball first and poke it into the back of the net past CJ Cochran.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, with tired legs preventing both sides from breaking down the others’ defense.

Energy FC will play its first away match of the season this Friday, July 17 against Austin Bold FC at Bold Stadium. Kickoff for that one is set for 8 p.m. CT and can be viewed live on ESPN+. The Greens return home July 22 to face Rio Grande Valley FC at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at or by calling 235-KICK (5425).
