Energy FC defeated Mid-American Christian University, the 2019 NCCAA Division 1 National Champions, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Taft Stadium. Goals from Jaime Chavez, Frank Lopez (2) and three trialists gave Energy FC the victory in the first preseason fixture of 2020.

Despite the Energy squad only being 9 days into preseason and MACU being in the middle of their offseason, both teams looked sharp and fit, and they provided the fans with high-quality soccer. The 90-minute match was divided into three, 30-minute periods, with the first group of Greens made up entirely of first team players.

Energy FC got off on the front foot with a goal from Chavez in the third minute. Zach Ellis-Hayden beat his defender down the right wing before crossing to Chavez at the six-yard box for the striker to clinically tap into the back of the net.

Just two minutes later, Lopez scored a well-worked goal after linking up with Cordell Cato. Cato fed Lopez through the middle to put the striker in alone on goal. Lopez then rounded the keeper before finishing into the open net from a tight angle.

Lopez scored his brace shortly after his opener with an audacious effort from near the halfway line that caught the keeper off his line.

The second period saw a new XI, with a mixture of Energy FC first team players and trialists. MACU pulled a goal back early in the second period before OKC restored the three-goal lead through a trialist. Goalkeeper Kyle Ihn also saved a penalty in the second period.

The Energy FC XI during the third period was made up entirely of trialists, who looked solid from front to back and ended up scoring twice, including one from the penalty spot.

Next up for the Greens is a trip to Frisco to take on FC Dallas of Major League Soccer Wednesday, January 29 at Toyota Soccer Center. That match will be played behind closed doors.

The team will have one more preseason match at Taft Stadium on Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m. against the University of Central Arkansas. Admission will be free.

Energy FC begins the 2020 USL Championship season at Taft Stadium March 7 at 7 p.m. against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Season seats for the 2020 season are on sale now. Visit https://www.energyfc.com/2020-memberships or call 235-KICK for more information.
