A penalty save from Bryan Byars and goal-of-the-week contender from Deshorn Brown weren't enough, as Phoenix Rising won 3-1 in the final match of 2019.

The Greens had a great chance to take the lead 12 minutes in when Mekeil Williams’ cross was punched to Atiba Harris by Phoenix goalkeeper Zac Lubin. Harris’ first-time effort was saved by Lubin, but the rebound went right back to Harris who was unable to keep the follow-up attempt on frame.

Just a minute later, Christian Ibeagha was ruled to have brought down Solomon Asante in the penalty area. Asante stepped up to take the penalty, but Bryan Byars made the save low and to the left to keep the match scoreless.

The hosts took the lead in the 21st minute when Asante found former Energy FC striker Adam Jahn at the top of the box. Jahn turned and bent a left-footed strike into the far post.

In the 32nd minute, Kevon Lambert’s first-time, right-footed, curling effort from the top of the penalty area sneaked just inside the post to double PHX’s lead.

OKC nearly got on the scoresheet in the 43rd minute when Deshorn Brown almost intercepted a backpass to Lubin, but the keeper was able to get a toe on the ball to prevent an open net for the striker.

In the 69th minute, Jahn added a third for the hosts after volleying into the back of the net from close range after a corner kick was headed down into his path.

The best goal of the night came in the 73rd minute, as Deshorn Brown picked up his 15th of the season. The striker’s quick, one-two with Kyle Hyland created enough space for the no. 9 to unleash an unstoppable, 25-yard, left-footed strike that dipped over Lubin and into the side netting.

The Greens nearly cut the deficit to one when Deshorn Brown found Omar Gordon in the box, but Gordon’s first-time effort crashed off the bar and away to safety.
