Energy FC battled back from two deficits to draw 2-2 with Real Monarchs SLC and move into 4th place in the Western Conference. Rafael Garcia opened the scoring from another free kick, and Deshorn Brown picked up his team-leading, 11th goal of the season.

Real Monarchs had the first decent chance of the night, as Maikel Chang tested Cody Laurendi in the 14th minute with a powerful header from the penalty spot, but the keeper was able to tip it over the bar with relative ease.

The best chance of the first half for OKC came in the 23rd minute when Alvin Jones’ cross from the right wing nearly found Deshorn Brown 12 yards from goal, but the striker couldn’t quite get his head on the ball.

It looked as if Douglas Martinez would give the hosts the lead in the 35th minute when a slip in the back led to the striker being in alone on goal. Fortunately for OKC, Christian Ibeagha recovered well to make the tackle and prevent Martinez from getting off the shot.

SLC took the lead in first minute of first-half stoppage time, when a cross from the left wing drifted across the penalty area, was headed back into the mix and Konrad Plewa met it with an overhead kick that had enough power to beat Laurendi.

The Greens wasted little time leveling the score in the second half, when Rafael Garcia’s angled free kick in the 52nd minute, from almost 30 yards, fizzed through the box and past SLC goalkeeper David Ochoa, who was anticipating an Energy FC player getting a touch on the ball.

The hosts regained the lead in the 79th minute when Chang floated a ball into the penalty area that found Martinez who was able to volley past Laurendi from close range.

OKC went the other way almost immediately after the kickoff, when Jon Brown, who had just subbed on, found Jones in space down the right channel. Jones then whipped a ball across the box to find Deshorn Brown at the back post, and the striker thumped the header home to level the score once again and secure a valuable road point.

Energy FC are back home next Sunday, September 8 to take on New Mexico United. Kickoff for that fixture is set for 6 p.m.
