Grand opening for new on-campus court set for August 5.

OKLAHOMA CITY (July 30, 2019) – School and community leaders will converge on the Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City campus on Monday, Aug. 5 for the grand opening of a new futsal court.

The court on the OSU-OKC campus is a collaborative project between the school, the Energy Assist Foundation, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Musco Lighting.

The grand opening ceremony is set for 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 5 and will include comments by key stakeholders and a youth futsal clinic. Futsal is a form of soccer played within a walled or fenced area, often seen in high-density areas where children may not have access to a full-size soccer field. The futsal ball is typically smaller than a standard soccer ball.

The court on the OSU-OKC campus features a hard surface and is located just to the south of the school’s Administration Building and Student Center.

OSU-OKC President Brad Williams said the court will provide an athletic outlet for OSU-OKC students, as well as serve as a resource for the community.

“We are pleased to partner with the Energy Assist Foundation, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Musco Lighting in a way that promotes healthy lifestyles and overall wellness,” Williams said. “We hope the court will serve as a community gathering point where visitors can learn about physical fitness and sportsmanship.”

Energy Assist Foundation Executive Director Mickey Dollens said creating safe spaces for community members to play is key to helping students develop critical life skills.

“Team-oriented activities like soccer have been shown to cultivate skills like confidence and collaboration,” Dollens said. “Supporting students in this way helps them succeed on and off the pitch, and highlights our foundation’s commitment to increase accessibility of soccer to youths in the community.”

The public is invited to attend the court’s grand opening festivities. The OSU-OKC campus is located at 900 N Portland Ave.
