Week 17 Recap

Energy FC (5th, 6-5-7, 25 points) return home after securing three points in a hard-fought battle with Las Vegas Lights FC. Deshorn Brown scored his ninth USL Championship goal of the season off an assist from Jon Brown in the 89th minute. The result, and manner in which it was obtained, proved to be quite similar to the same fixture in 2018. Cody Laurendi and the Energy FC defense, bolstered by the return of Alvin Jones and Mekeil Williams, kept their fourth clean sheet of the season in the 1-0 victory. Laurendi also extended his league-leading saves tally to 58.

Week 18 Preview

The win over Vegas was the first away win since the season opener in El Paso, and the Greens will welcome Locomotive FC (5th, 7-4-6, 27 points) to Taft Stadium for the first time Saturday night.

After a three-match win streak to begin the month of June, Locomotive FC are winless in their last three outings, most recently losing 3-0 away to Fresno FC. Despite the slump, El Paso is still in 5th place in the Western Conference and boast an impressive 3-1-4 record away from home. Jerome Kiesewetter leads the way with 10 goals – tied for third best in the league, and Logan Ketterer has kept eight clean sheets (third best in USLC) and only allowed 16 goals (fourth best in USLC).

This will technically be the third meeting between the sides, including preseason. Energy FC won the first fixture in Tucson, 2-1, with goals from Deshorn Brown and Cordell Cato. Brown and Cato were at it again just a week later in the opener, with the former scoring a brace and the latter adding a late goal to seal the points. Brown’s opening goal that night happened after just 12 seconds, the fastest goal in Energy FC history and the second-fastest goal in USL Championship history.

With the Trinidad and Tobago trio making their return last weekend and Atiba Harris serving a one-match suspension, the only player guaranteed not to feature is Je-Vaughn Watson who just finished up national team duty with a Concacaf Gold Cup semifinal run with Jamaica.

Saturday’s match kicks off from Taft Stadium at 8:00 CDT. Tickets can be found at energyfc.com/july or by calling 235-KICK.
