Energy FC got off to a dream start to the 2019 campaign, as Deshorn Brown found the back of the net after just 12 seconds — the fastest goal in club history and the second-fastest in USL Championship history. Mekeil Williams played a long ball over the top of the defense, Brown controlled, danced around El Paso defender Bryam Rebellon and smashed his shot into the back of the net.

The lead was fairly short-lived, however, as El Paso’s Sebastian Contreras got to the end line and put in a cross that was met by Derek Gebhard to tap into an open net.

The Greens pressed for the remainder of the half and nearly went back ahead on a couple of occasions. In the 22nd minute, Williams found Omar Gordon in behind the defense, but El Paso goalkeeper Logan Ketterer stood tall to deny Gordon from a difficult angle.

Just a minute later, Callum Ross found himself in acres of space and slipped a pass into Alexy Bosetti. It looked like Bosetti was through on goal, but Mechack Jerome recovered and tackled the ball out for a corner kick.

Bosetti nearly turned provider in the 38th minute, when he whipped in a fantastic, out-swinging free kick to the back post, but Nicolas Taravel’s header just missed the frame.

The home team started the second half on the front foot with James Kiffe barely missing the post with a shot from distance in the 46th minute.

Just five minutes later, Kiffe found Gebhard all alone at the back post, but his header from three yards out missed wide.

Brown added another in the 54th minute, when a quick throw in from Gordon caught the El Paso defense sleeping. Ketterer came off his line, but Brown dribbled around the onrushing keeper and rolled the ball into the back of the goal from a tight angle.

The hosts nearly equalized in the 64th when Rebellon’s shot from distance deflected off the post.

Locomotive FC had a golden chance to even things up in the 81st minute, after the ball fell to Andrew Fox four yards from goal. Fortunately for OKC, the defender pulled his shot well wide.

Energy FC capitalized on the missed opportunity just moments later, when Kyle Hyland played an incredible long ball over the top of the defense to find Cordell Cato in the penalty area. Cato took one touch and finished with aplomb to seal the points.
