OKLAHOMA CITY – OKC Energy FC announced on Wednesday the club has signed Edmond, Okla. native Shawn McLaws for the 2018 USL season, pending league and federation approval.

McLaws has played the last two seasons for the Harrisburg City Islanders, appearing in 57 games and logging more than 5,000 minutes of action. McLaws appeared in all 30 of the City Islanders’ games in the 2016 season, and this past year won 41 of 53 tackles and recorded 39 interceptions.

“I'm really happy to be back playing in my hometown,” said McLaws. “The opportunity to play in front of family and friends again is something special. I grew up in this soccer community and I cannot wait to be a part of it again!”

Drafted by New York Red Bulls in the Third Round of the 2015 MLS Superdraft, McLaws played his first match with Red Bulls in early 2015 during a preseason friendly against Energy FC. During the 2015 season, he made 21 appearances for the New York Red Bulls II, helping the side reach the USL Cup Playoffs in its inaugural season.

“We will take a strong look any time we have the opportunity to sign a player with Oklahoma ties,” said Energy FC President Jeff Ewing. “McLaws is one of those players. His local ties give both of us the opportunity to continue to enrich the soccer community in the state of Oklahoma.”

The addition of McLaws brings the number of players signed by Energy FC for the 2018 season to 10.  He joins forwards Miguel Gonzalez and Jonathan Brown; midfielders Juan Pablo Guzman, Jose Barril, Philip Rasmussen and Alex Dixon as well as defenders Kyle Hyland, Richard Dixon and Coady Andrews.
