Jose Angulo scored a brace and had an assist, and Alex Dixon tallied two assists, as Energy FC clinched a berth in the 2017 USL Playoffs by downing the Swope Park Rangers, 4-1, Sunday night at Taft Stadium. Angulo’s two goals gave the OKC forward five goals in Energy FC’s last two games.
OKC’s scoring started in the 26th minute when, off an Anthony Wallace corner kick, Angulo headed a ball toward the Swope Park net, where Miguel Gonzalez pushed a shot past Rangers keeper Darrin MacLeod for a 1-0 OKC lead.
Angulo cushioned Energy FC’s lead with his first goal in the 45th minute. After Alex Dixon carried the ball deep into the right corner of the Swope Park box, he sent a cross into the Rangers six, where Angulo made a sliding kick that deflected the ball past MacLeod. Angulo further extended the OKC lead to 4-1 in second half stoppage time, when he took a pass from Jonathan Brown up the left side and booted a shot around a diving MacLeod for his second score of the match.
A goal by Juan Pablo Guzman in the 65th minute upped OKC’s lead to 3-0 after the OKC captain took a cross from Dixon deep in the Swope Park six and touched it by MacLeod.
Swope Park got on the board in the 88th minute, when a Liam Doyle free kick from nearly 25 yards out skipped past diving OKC keeper C.J. Cochran.
Cochran, making his third start in place of injured goalkeeper and captain Cody Laurendi, earned his third straight win. Over that span, Cochran has allowed just two goals.
With the win, Energy FC improved to 13-11-7, assuring no worse than an eighth seed in the USL Playoffs. OKC currently sits in seventh place in the Western Conference with one regular season game remaining.
Energy FC’s next match is it’s final regular season game. The club welcomes Seattle Sounders FC 2 for a 5 p.m. CDT start on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Taft Stadium.
