Energy FC picks up three big points on the road

Alex Dixon scored one and created another to lift OKC Energy FC past Orange County Soccer Club Friday night in Irvine, California. The road win is just OKC’s second away from Taft Stadium so far this season.

Dixon opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Miguel Gonzalez played a through ball to Richard Dixon down the right flank. Richard Dixon then found a streaking Alex Dixon through the middle who picked up the pass, slashed through the box, and slotted the ball past Orange County’s Charlie Lyon.

Orange County came close to leveling the score before halftime when Wuilito Fernandes was able to direct a corner kick on target, but his header was cleared off the line by Jose Barril.

Energy FC then went right back down the field as Miguel Gonzalez cut inside the box onto his right foot and drove a shot that was just tipped away by Lyon.

After the restart, OKC ramped up the pressure early on with good chances from Alex Dixon and Miguel Gonzalez, before Orange County’s Joe Franco turned one into the back of his own net in the 53rd minute. Richard Dixon’s throw-in found Alex Dixon all alone near the end line, and his cross back across goal was intended for Jose Angulo, but Franco’s attempt to intercept resulted in a goal for the Greens.

Orange County got back into the match with a goal from Jerry van Ewijk in the 65th minute. A well-worked give and go between Van Ewijk and Fernandes resulted in Van Ewijk going clean through on goal, and the forward was able to place the ball past Cody Laurendi.

Good goal scoring opportunities were few and far between during the last half hour of play as the Greens were able to see off the home side with a 2-1 victory.

Jonathan Brown made his debut for Energy FC tonight replacing Andy Craven in the 76th minute after a head injury forced him off shortly after coming on as a substitute.

The win moved OKC to 9-9-6 on the season, while Orange County now sits at 7-7-8.

Energy FC next travels to Kansas City, Missouri for a 7:30 p.m. CDT start Saturday, September 2, when the club faces Swope Park Rangers at Swope Soccer Village.

The next home game for Energy FC is a 5 p.m. CDT kickoff on Sunday, September 10, when OKC takes on Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at Taft Stadium.
