Cochran records clean sheet in first USL start of the year

In his first start of the 2017 USL season, OKC goalkeeper C.J. Cochran recorded his first clean sheet of the year as Energy FC and San Antonio FC played to a scoreless draw Saturday night at Taft Stadium.  The draw increased Energy FC’s current Taft Stadium unbeaten streak to five.

Despite a hotly-contested match that featured a number of quality scoring chances for each club, neither side was able to find the back of the net, thanks to solid defending and goal keeping. OKC defenders Michael Harris, Mickey Daly and Anthony Wallace combined for 15 clearances to keep San Antonio at bay for most of the match.

In the 61st minute, San Antonio had its best scoring opportunity when Kris Tyrpak got ahead of a defender down the right side and sent a cross to the middle for unmarked Akwafei Ajeakwa. With no defender to help, Cochran sprinted to the top of the six and made a diving stop on the cross to preserve scoreless match.

San Antonio keeper Diego Restrepo had a similar moment later in the match. In the 66th minute, OKC’s Alex Dixon flicked a pass off his right foot into the San Antonio six for an unmarked Andy Craven, but Restrepo charged the shot and knocked Craven’s uncontested shot away. Craven led all players with four shots and two shots on goal.

Energy FC held an 11-8 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks over San Antonio.

The draw moved OKC’s USL record to 4-5-2, while San Antonio remains unbeaten at 9-0-4.

Prior to the match, Energy FC’s USL PDL squad, Energy U23, defeated Brazos Valley Cavalry FC, 3-0, for its seventh straight win of 2017. The club currently sits atop the Southern Conference of the league at 7-0-0 and is one of just two undefeated teams in the league, along with New York Red Bulls U23 at 5-0-0.

Energy FC’s next travels to Denver for the fourth round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and a matchup against an MLS opponent. OKC will face the Colorado Rapids in an 8 p.m. CDT start on Tuesday, June 13, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.

USL play resumes for OKC the following Friday, June 16, when Energy FC takes on Portland Timbers 2 at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
