Barril and Wojcik goals advance Energy

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Jose Barril and Wojciech Wojcik each tallied a goal as OKC Energy FC moved on to the fourth round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win over fellow USL side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC Wednesday night at Weidner Field. The win was Energy FC’s fourth consecutive.

After a scoreless first half that saw OKC hold a significant advantage in scoring chances, OKC continued to pressure Colorado Springs early in the second half. In the 73rd minute, Barril took a cross-field pass from Alex Dixon near the upper-left edge of the Switchbacks box, faked a shot and then booted the go-ahead goal into the upper-right corner, past Colorado Springs Switchbacks keeper Dan Jackson.

A little more than 10 minutes later, Wojcik added another score for OKC, taking a feed from Miguel Gonzalez at the top of the Colorado Springs box and rolling a left-footed bender off the right glove of the outstretched Jackson.

Colorado Springs cut the deficit to a single goal at the end of the second half, when Kevuaghn Frater was tripped up by OKC defender Richard Dixon in the Energy FC box, and the Switchbacks were awarded a penalty kick. Jordan Burt converted the ensuing kick to tighten OKC’s lead to 2-1, but Energy FC held off the Switchbacks for the final 90 seconds of stoppage time.

In U.S. Open Cup play, Energy FC will next face MLS side the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, June 13, in Denver, Colo.

Energy FC will remain in Colorado Springs, however, as the club readies for its next USL match, a 7 p.m. CDT start on Saturday, June 3, against the Switchbacks, once again at Weidner Field.

OKC returns home on Tuesday, June 6, to face international soccer star Omar Bravo and Phoenix Rising FC at Taft Stadium.
