Newcomers Alex Dixon and Miguel Gonzalez and trialist Josh Taylor each tallied a goal as OKC Energy FC defeated John Brown University 3-1 in OKC’s first preseason match of 2017 at Casady High School in Oklahoma City.
Energy FC got on the board first, when in the 13th minute Luis Martinez sent a corner kick into the box that Dixon headed past JBU goalkeeper Adam Holt. Dixon finished the first half with several quality scoring chances in his OKC debut.
In the 72nd minute, JBU tied the game when a loose ball in the OKC box caromed to Kelvin Omondi, who blasted a line-drive shot past diving OKC keeper Jacob Lissek. Lissek had entered the match in the 60th minute, following a pair of 30 scoreless-minute stints by goalkeepers Cody Laurendi and C.J. Cochran.
OKC regained the lead in the 78th minute when Taylor took a pass from Kyle Hyland near the lower left corner, carried it into the JBU box and fired a shot past the outstretched Holt, making the score 2-1.
Seven minutes later, Energy FC extended its lead to 3-1, when a series of passes deep in the JBU box by Danni König and Daniel Gonzalez resulted in the latter’s brother, Miguel Gonzalez, rolling a score from the left corner of the JBU six.
Energy FC’s preseason schedule continues Wednesday, Feb. 15, when the club takes on Rogers State University in a 6 p.m. start at Speegle Stadium on the campus of Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City. Admission is free, with a donation to Cleats 4 Kids encouraged for those wishing to attend.
