PEORIA, Ariz. — OKC Energy FC and Arizona United SC played to a 0-0 draw Saturday night at Peoria Sports Complex.
Tempers flared late in the match as the two sides struggled to overcome great goaltending by keepers Cody Laurendi of OKC and Carl Woszczynski of Arizona. Just following the end of regulation time, Energy FC’s Danni König contested a ball in the Arizona box with Woszczynski that led to confrontations between players on both clubs and yellow cards being issued to Energy captain Michael Thomas and forward Jordan Rideout, and Woszczynski.
Earlier, in the 88th minute of the match, OKC’s Evans Frimpong had a breakaway chance in the Arizona box, but was hauled down by Nick Costa before he could muster a shot.
Shortly after, König had a similar opportunity but met United SC’s Uchenna Uzo in a collision inside the Arizona box that saw König violently launched to the ground.
Arizona’s best chance came off a free kick by Luke Rooney from about 20 yards out in the 60th minute of play. After a quick set, Rooney blasted a line drive shot toward the center of the OKC net that Laurendi was able to deflect upward and into the crossbar, narrowly preventing a United SC score.
OKC’s prime opportunity happened 67th minute, when Frimpong took a centering pass in the Arizona box and put a shot on goal that Woszczynski made a great sliding save on to preserve the scoreless draw.
With the draw, both squads earned a standings point. Energy FC’s record went to 1-1-3, while Arizona’s moved to 2-3-2.
Energy FC’s next returns home, where the club will face USL expansion club San Antonio FC in a 6 p.m. start Sunday, May 15 at Taft Stadium.
