Danni Konig scored his first goal of the season as OKC Energy FC extended its unbeaten streak to five games in a 1-1 draw with San Antonio FC Sunday night at Taft Stadium.
With OKC trailing 1-0 in the latter part of the first half, FC Dallas assignee Coy Craft sent an upfield pass to König, who maneuvered the ball around San Antonio’s Greg Cochrane and Stephen McCarthy and blasted a shot past keeper Josh Ford. The 37th minute goal was the 2015 USL MVP Finalist’s first since Sept. 12, 2015.
San Antonio opened scoring in the 17th minute of play, when Shawn Chin found a wide-open Danny Garcia near the top of the OKC box, where Garcia rolled a shot into the lower right corner of the Energy FC net, past a diving Cody Laurendi.
Early on, OKC had chances, but San Antonio’s defensive unit held Energy FC at bay. In the 15th minute, König took a loose ball from the right side of the San Antonio box but was pressured to the outside, missing his shot wide.
In the 22nd minute, OKC’s Jose Cuevas blasted a turnaround shot on a wide open net in close, but the shot deflected off a pair of San Antonio defenders, thwarting the Energy FC scoring chance.
Laurendi finished with five saves on the match, including a diving stop on a Manolo Sanchez shot from about 20 yards in the early second half.
With the draw, OKC’s record moved to 1-1-4. The draw was the club’s third consecutive, one shy of the club record of four from July 5 to July 25 in 2015.
Energy FC next travels to Clinton, Miss. for the club’s first match of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. OKC faces the PDL’s Mississippi Brilla at 7 p.m. CST Wednesday, May 18 at Clinton High School in Clinton, Miss.
USL play continues for OKC, as the club travels to south Texas for a rematch with San Antonio FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21 at Toyota Field.
