Paul Wyatt scored in the 85th minute as OKC Energy FC defeated the University of Nebraska-Omaha 1-0 Saturday night in preseason action at Norman North High School.

OKC Energy FC had its first quality scoring chance 10 minutes into the game following a corner kick, but the Mavericks managed to keep the ball from crossing the line. Philip Lund broke away from the defense and just missed an empty net by hitting the left post at the 15-minute mark. Lund had another opportunity just two minutes later but UNO goalkeeper Josh Christensen corralled the saved to keep the game scoreless.

The Mavericks got a quality opportunity in the 26th minute but Cyprian Hedrick came up with a great defensive play to keep the ball from getting through. Michael Thomas sent the ball to the net from about 20 yards out in the 31st minute but Christensen deflected the ball out of play to give OKC Energy FC another corner kick.

After the Mavericks got a scoring chance in the 44th minute, UNO had its only corner kick of the opening frame in stoppage time. The two teams went to the locker rooms tied 0-0 at halftime.

The Mavericks came out with offensive pressure to start the second half but UNO was unable to capitalize. OKC Energy FC got its first free kick of the contest in the 61st minute but Christensen jumped to make the save and the Mavericks were able to clear the ball.

OKC Energy FC emptied the bench in the 64th minute, and back-to-back offside calls took away scoring chances for midway through the half. A second free kick attempt by OKC Energy FC was cleared by UNO and the Mavericks took the ball downfield and just missed the net.

OKC Energy FC regained ball possession late in the period and the offensive pressure paid off as a rebounder from Wyatt gave Energy a 1-0 lead in the 85th minute. Wyatt’s rebound header came off a shot from David Leichty and broke the tie.

UNO got a free kick late in the game but solid defense came through to keep the 1-0 lead.

OKC Energy FC continues preseason action Wednesday evening with a 6 p.m. contest in Tulsa against Oral Roberts. Admission to the match is free.
